The Hopeless Romantic Me
I love love. Ask anyone. I’m that girl that cries at Hallmark commercials…or this Budweiser commercial…ugh don’t even get me started…
I love that feeling of butterflies and obsessive compulsive (yet non-stalking) thoughts of thinking about if that person is thinking about you at that very second…it makes me giddy just writing that down. I love when old(er) people have their arms wrapped in an embrace at a stoplight and I love seeing couples hold hands as they walk carelessly down the street…. I love when hand holding becomes brushing hair out of my eyes to have that first awkward kiss. I love that feeling of being part of something else, something outside of yourself, of losing yourself in someone’s eyes, sharing in someone’s life…and becoming one of your own world. I miss it. I hope for it. And I love it. And I know he’s out there somewhere going, dammit, where is she already?!?
(I’m right here, waitin’ for you, kiddo.)
The Cynical Me
I love love. I just don’t understand why there’s so much emphasis on this day. One day of forced love proclamation does not a lover make.
You bought me the biggest bouquet of flowers ever made? Great, just remember that they’ll probably die sooner than you’ll pay them off.
You got me a big box of chocolate? Fantastic, but don’t forget to bring me a big ol’ box of Kleenex and remember to hold my hair back when I get the flu.
You taking me out to a nice dinner and ordering drinks I know you can’t afford in hopes of getting laid? Terrific, just don’t forget it’ll be you who will pass out before my coat’s even unbuttoned.
Don’t get me wrong, I love love. I just don’t love this day, because in fact, love should be around all the fucking time. You want to see love? Love is not the countless men running around the train station with ‘mine is bigger than yours’ bouquets. Nor is it the women in the office swooning over the mail cart with “ooooo, who got THOSE flowers?!” Love isn’t material, it can’t be bought (especially for one gosh darn day). Love. Just. Is.
And it is, in fact, all around…and it will be here tomorrow and the day after that and so on. So stop putting so much god damn emphasis on this day. It really is a silly, silly day.
Now if you’ll excuse me…
I’ll be in the discounted Valentine’s Day candy aisle at CVS….
Happy Valentine’s Day to both sides of your personality ♥
