Contemplations: Defining Neurotic.

contemplations and life observations / Saturday, August 18th, 2012

Someone recently told me I was the most neurotic person they’d ever met. And while I highly doubt that (I am sure there is someone out there worse than me), I wanted to understand more…I wanted to see what the actual definition was, because frankly, I had no idea. I knew that if it pertained to describing me, it must include: being overdramatic, overanalytical to a fault, pessimistic and all-around anxious at every given moment of any given day, yet still able to see the sunny sarcastic side of life as well.  Turns out, I wasn’t far off…

According to the Urban Dictionary (the most reliable source the Internet has to offer, no doubt), I ran across these definitions. Some of which made me laugh. Others that did not. Here they are for your reading enjoyment, with my side notes added for humor:

1. Neurotic: poor ability to adapt to one’s environment, an inability to change one’s life patterns, and the inability to develop a richer, more complex, more satisfying personality. So, if one is unable to adapt or develop, how might one still be breathing?2. Neurotic: On a scale of 1-10; Where 10 is the healthy optimistic well adjusted person with good coping skills to stress and change, that came from a well adjusted family, with no hang up or inhibitions that determent the quality of his life. So a score of 1, would be Neurotic. If one is still well-adjusted, but copes with life stresses and changes by being neurotic, comes from a well-adjusted, albeit dysfunctional family (because what family isn’t), but still loves their life, are they neurotic?

3. Neurotic: A negative personality trait that make one prone to anxiety depression, that appears genetic. Can all us neurotic people join hands and just blame our parents? Can I get an AMEN?!

4. Neurotic: A inharmonious balance between the ego, id, and super ego, Which affect the thoughts and behaviors produced from the ego. So the voices in their heads are making their ego annoyed, causing them strife and thus neurotic. Makes sense…

5. Neurotic: Not to be confused with Psychotic, which means to be out of touch with reality, Neurotic means to suck at dealing with reality. Love this one. It should be a bumper sticker: I’m not crazy, I just suck at dealing.

6. Neurotic: Someone with extreme mood swings. A constant worrier. A paranoid personality. Someone who often suffers from extreme stress. Someone who can’t cope in a social setting. So not true. I can totally cope in social situations. Just ask my friend, Oberon!

7. Neurotic: A total freaking psycho, with serious emotional issues. Prone to bouts of extreme paranoia and schizophrenia. This one’s my favorite, probably written by someone who just broke up with a girlfriend…

8. Neurotic: Someone who lacks attention, thus will do anything for it. I believe these people are called attention-whore, not neurotic. Get it straight, Urban Dictionary!

These definitions make me laugh, but some of them make sense. I AM overly moody, especially when not given food or caffeine in a timely matter. I do sometimes have a problem with change, and my process of dealing with it does usually involve a couple days and bottles of wine. And, I’ll admit, I am somewhat of a worry-wart when it comes to other people’s impression of me. But I am also witty and humorous and have a good heart. I am one-of-a-kind and reliable, generous and adorable. So if neurotic is just another layer to add to this personality I call me, well then, label away! I can only be who I am. And apparently, that involves the word Neurotic. So instead of hiding from it, I’m owning it:

My name is Stefi, and I am Charmingly Neurotic. 🙂
