It’s like: a biography of Julia Child with a Nora Ephron romantic comedy without too much of the cheesiness
Stars you’d know: Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, Stanley Tucci
Their tagline: Passion. Ambition. Butter. Do You Have What It Takes
My tagline: Passion and ambition translate across two women’s lives.
Verdict: Meryl Streep is a genius. Her characterization of Julia Child was neither an impression, nor caricature. It was a portrayal that I hope will win her a golden globe, because she was just brilliant. Stanley Tucci was marvelous as well. I had read Julie Powell’s blog book when it came out in 2005, and what I can remember of it, I liked. But there needed to be less Julie and more Julia. Amy Adams is sweet, but she in no way made me root for her Julie. All I wanted to see was Meryl’s performance. That’s it. I could have watched a two hour film of just Julia. In fact, I think they ought to make a sequel/prequel of Julia’s life. And I don’t know if it is because Meryl was so excellent, or if Julia Child was just this unique force to be reckoned with, but I couldn’t get enough of her story. As far as Julie’s story, I thought it was fine, kinda weak, and really, to me, had no passion whatsoever. I have no idea if that was the writing, the acting, or whatever. All I know is that I just tuned out for the “present day” stuff, and fell in love with the Meryl Streep/Julia Child parts.
Final words: Entertaining, and a must see for the Meryl Streep portrayal. You will be hungry after it though…
