I love Alarm Clocks

contemplations and life observations / Sunday, November 9th, 2008

I have a weird obsession with alarm clocks and kitchen timers. As in, I collect them. I know, weird, right? I’m sure if I had a therapist, she would say I was obsessed with time.  It’s not like I am constantly checking time, or even actively use them besides for making cookies. My alarm clock right now is my cell phone. I know, lame. And I sleep with a sound machine to drown out the sound of the city. So I guess I actively use two alarm clocks. They’re just not as cool as these new ones I have found. I just like the design of them. Hey, some people collect pez dispensers. At least my collection has some function.  So here are a few of my favorites that I hope to get under the Christmas tree this year:

The Practical Alarm Clock

moonbeam41

I have wanted this alarm clock for some time because I sleep with blackout shades, and I can never tell when it is light out or not. Perfect for seasonal lack of sun disorder I think we all have in the winter months. Plus I love the retro feel of it. First introduced in 1952, this unique “moonbeam” clock wakes you with a gently illuminating light. If you fall back asleep, a bell sounds. Available at llbean.com

Room Tech Beingz Alarm Clock: This one would probably just plain annoy me, but its hilariously cute.

Isn't he cute?

  • Start each day with this interactive Alarm Clock that opens its mouth to shout one of three different alarm sounds or to play music, letting you know it¿s time to get moving! It doesn’t take much to keep Alarm Clock happy.
  • Try petting its top sensor every once in a while to show your appreciation for getting up on time. This hi-tech and stylish room accessory even pounds his hands to wake you up!
  • Just before the alarm goes off, his feet will start to glow. When you’re awake, watch this animated character dance to your music with funky colored lights and animated movements. Built-in FM radio.
  • Available at Target.

Voco–Wake up like British Royalty!

voco_clock

You must, must, must visit this website. It’s hilarious. This is probably my most favorite clock. The clock wakes you up with a butler’s voice saying things like, “I’m so sorry to disturb you, madam, but it appears to be morning. Very inconvenient, I agree. It is the rotation of the earth that is to blame.” or “I’m afraid the staff has absconded, madam. And it is my day off. I trust it will not be too onerous to make your own exquisitely sliced toast an perfectly cooked breakfast?” The clock is voiced by well-known British actor/comedian Stephen Fry, known for playing the famous butler, Jeeves alongside his comedy partner and House star Hugh Laurie. Waking up to guys who talk in English accents… what’s not  to love? Available at voco.uk.com

Retro TV Clock–Wake up to old Game Show Jingles!

retro-tvn1

I would never use this one, but it’s entirely too cute for someone like me who works in tv. There is a remote chance that you will just fall in love this Retro TV alarm clock. It is housed in a retro-style television and will play back old game show themes and sounds to awake you in the mornings. It displays color changing text patterns that would easily get annoying while trying to sleep. Luckily it includes a remote control for turning off the display among other things. Available at sourcingmap.com

Clocky–Hide and Seek Clock

Chase me!

The alarm goes off once, but if you hit snooze Clocky jumps off your nightstand (up to 3 feet) and wheels around your room looking for a place to hide before it sounds the alarm a second time. The snooze time can be set from 0-9 minutes, so if you set it at 0 Clocky runs right away. Nothing like a little hide-and-seek to get you going in the morning. I’m not sure if I could use this, as my dog would probably go nuts, but that would get me out of bed, right?  Available at uncommongoods.com or target.com.

The Rocket Alarm Clock–Blast off!

Countdown to launch!

By far my favorite new alarm clock. Perfect for any space nut like me. Blast off every morning with our Rocket Alarm Clock! Just set the digital alarm, and as “launch time” approaches, you’ll hear a countdown begin. If you’re not awake to disarm the launch procedure, the Rocket Alarm Clock’s launches its missile, beeping until you return it to the clock’s base. It’s a space-age wake-up call! Available at urbanoutfitters.com.
