How do you vote for someone who is the best actor? Do you vote for the one who is so scarily psychotic that you wonder if the actor herself has a dark side that no one knows about, or do you vote for the one that makes you forget they are an actor, instead making you feel like you are watching the real person in the flesh, as though the movie were a documentary?Oscar season is upon us, and I have not a clue.
Does IT even matter anymore? Being the jaded film major that I am, I look to movies where I dont necessarily have to think, where I escape into another realm that makes my present reality subside for at least an hour or two. Movies, to me, are pure escapism, and yes, while they are masterpieces in their own right, I look to them as an escape from the everyday. So if I am looking at my watch or notice the popcorn chomping cow behind me in the theatre, the movie is obviously not holding my interest. But if I dont even notice the edit splices (the corner circles that accompany any film-based movie..ha, now I’ve ruined you!), then I feel like it is a good film, regardless of critics choice.
Escaping is the key to a good movie.
