Film Review: The Prestige–A Journey of the Magic of Perception

Wow. That is all I could say last night after viewing Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece, The Prestige. Wow. It’s one of those movies that stays with you long after viewing, and makes you want to re-watch it, if only it weren’t 2:10 minutes…For those of you who don’t know who Chris Nolan is, he is the genius behind Memento and Batman Begins. Although I haven’t seen Batman Begins (for reasons that bring back very cold memories of lockdown crew), I have to say this is one of my favorite films so far. It’s all about perception, magic, and the element of psychological surprise. It does help that two of the main actors (Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman) are enjoyable to watch, and the production design is amazing. It was also up for an Oscar, but I think it lost to Dreamgirls. Anyway, if you have a chance, check this film out, it is truely mystical and amazing. It’s so hard to describe, like Memento. Chris Nolan is one of those directors who I hope will be around for a while, and while he’s not as qooky as the guy that did the Royal Tannenbaums (thankfully so), he has that same independent spirit with a big studio budget, which makes for one really entertaining and engrossing movie. You will truly get lost in the storyline. The escapism returns.
